One of my high school band instructors had many sayings – to point out when our focus was lacking, or to remind us that individually we could make a difference. The one I remember most is "perfect practice makes perfect". What a life lesson that is!
As it relates to photography, being where you want to be at the right time, setting up a tripod and using a cable release greatly improve the chances of a good result, but it takes an investment of time. While my practice making pictures seldom approaches perfection, when I make an effort to follow that advice something good comes from the time spent behind the view finder.
It always helps to find a sunrise scene like this, of course:
